THE BUILDING
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Origin - Designed in 1892, according to the pattern of the Vereinsbank (Bank of the Union) located in the German city of Munich, the construction of the future headquarters of the Bank of Brazil was finished in 1896. It did not arrive, however, to be occupied by this institution, which was experiencing a serious liquidity crisis. In return of a financial help from the federal Government, the bank gave its new headquarters to the Union, which offered, on the other hand, the building to the STF; hence this court left Lavradio Street and occupied it until 1909, when the STF moved to Central Avenue.
Subsequently the building housed the Savings Bank of Conversion and Amortization, and in 1946 it became the headquarters of the Superior Electoral Court - TSE. In the 1960's, with the moving of the Superior Electoral Court - TSE to the new federal capital, Brasilia, the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) occupied the building; until 1996, when it was transferred to Presidente Wilson Avenue. Starting from 1999, the building would be dedicated to public use, with the creation of the Judicial Palace of Citizenship. |
