BRAZIL HAS ALMOST 105 THOUSAND VOTERS living ABROAD

The number of Brazilian voters abroad grew significantly in the recent years. In 2007 alone, the Electoral Justice reported an increase of 21% in the number of Brazilian voters living in other countries.

From the data analyzed referent the period of January-December 2007, it was verified that the number of enrolled voters ascended from 86,202 to almost 105 thousand in the diplomatic representations around the world. There was an average of almost 1,500 new applications per month.

Voters living abroad correspond to 0.082 percent of the Brazilian electorate, which amounts to 127,464,143 citizens qualified to vote.

There are 94 electoral zones throughout the five continents; the biggest electorate is in the United States, with 35,875 voters.

In Europe, the country with the biggest number of enrolments is Portugal, with 11,116. In Oceania, it is Australia, with 1,134. In Asia, 5,373 of the Brazilian voters are concentrated in Japan, and in the Middle East, Lebanon has 1,186 enrolled voters.

From among the countries bordering the Brazilian territory, Paraguay totals the biggest number of enrolled people (2,650), followed by Argentina (2,304) and, surprisingly, by French Guiana (1,841), which has more registered voters than Uruguay (1,105).

This growth is also due to the campaigns carried out by the Brazilian Electoral Justice everywhere, which aimed at bringing the exercise of citizenship to all Brazilians, wherever they are.
