SECURITY IN THE ELECTRONIC VOTING SYSTEM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Destination - Each electronic ballot box receives a specific task and can be used as a voting ballot box, contingency ballot box or justification ballot box.
A voting ballot box contains the list of voters of one section and of the candidates that can be voted in that section (e.g., voters of a municipality do not vote on candidates for mayor of another municipality; neither voters of a state can vote on candidates for governor of another state), so that the ballot box can be used only in the section to which it has been designated.
The process of enabling an electronic ballot box to be used in a particular section is called "loading the ballot box"; in other words, systems and specific lists for that section are included using a memory card. Following that, the voting memory card (external flash card) and diskette are inserted into their respective compartments. After some operational tests, these compartments are sealed.
Contingency ballot boxes are prepared to replace voting ballot boxes that may be damaged. Justification ballot boxes are prepared specifically for receiving no vote (abstention) justification. The contingency and justification ballot boxes each receive a specific load for the purpose for which they were prepared. After operational tests, they are sealed as well.
The political parties and scientific organizations hired by them, the OAB, the Public Prosecution Office and any citizen with credentials in the electoral zone can observe the loading, testing and sealing of the different kinds of ballot boxes.
The memory card used for loading the ballot box also generates a correspondence list that is used by the system totalizer. This way, only the votes originated from the electronic ballot boxes enabled for a respective section or their contingency boxes are calculated.
